At least 30% of Americans keep their garage door closed so their friends and neighbors won’t see the mess. For some homeowners, their garage is so full that they can’t even put their car inside.

Since vehicles are such a major investment, it’s a shame to expose them to the elements when you have coveted garage space. Those that do have space to park in their garage might still have trouble finding what they need.

The good news is, you can add more garage storage space with a little rearranging. Read on to get storage ideas for small spaces so you can make the most of your garage.

Sort Through Items in Your Garage

The first step in adding more space is to get rid of some things. Sort through your tools, holiday decorations, and lawn equipment to see what you can get rid of.

Donate or sell anything you have multiples of and get rid of anything that’s broken. Learn how to dispose of hazardous household chemicals safely by checking with your local waste disposal company.

Install Wall Shelves

Once you’ve pared down your stuff, install wall shelves to create storage space. If you’re good with carpentry, you can build traditional wooden shelves. If not, you can find standalone metal shelving units or track based shelves at your local hardware store.

Using vertical space will free up space from the floor and make room for your vehicle. Use bins or baskets to organize items on each shelf. If you can’t see through the bins, make sure to label what’s inside so it’s easier to find what you need.

Try a Pegboard Wall

A great way to organize tools that you use often is with a pegboard wall. It frees up drawer space and makes tools easy to find. You can find pegboard at any local hardware store in multiple dimensions.

Once you’ve screwed the pegboard into the wall, it’s time to start hanging things on it. It’s a great way to display screwdrivers, hammers, and wrenches so they’re in easy reach. You can even paint the pegboard a different color if you’d like.

Use Overhead Space

One often overlooked storage space in the garage is the overhead space. It’s a handy place to store seasonal items like Christmas decorations or bicycles.

You can store bicycles from the ceiling on bike hooks from the hardware store. These will keep bikes off the garage floor, but still keep them visible.

Try hanging plastic bins of holiday decor in a track system. Simply use two 2x4s to create a track for the top of the bins to slide into. This will free up wall space for items you use more often.
