Did you know that certain floor coatings can help create an optical illusion?

Many metallic floors are made of epoxy, and have glitter-like particles mixed in with the coating to create a metallic effect. Because many epoxy coatings are thick and self-leveling, these particles flow and give the floor a feel of movement.

But no matter what type of garage floor you have, it’s important to maintain its cleanliness and shine. Cleaning a coated floor requires caution and knowledge.

How to Clean Your Metallic Floor

Maintaining your metallic floor coating is similar to other floor coatings. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Sweep and vacuum dirt
  • Avoid mopping with soap-based cleaners
  • Wipe up oil and other chemicals

The first step to maintaining your floor is sweeping and vacuuming. Just like anything else, it’s important to get rid of any debris before moving on in the cleaning process.

Sweeping and vacuuming help decrease the chance of dirt scraping the floor. This causes chips and ruins your smooth surface.

After dirt and grit are removed from the floor, it’s time to mop. Avoid using soap-based cleaners because they can leave a haze on the floor. This will build up over time and ruin the color of your floor.

If you want to mop your metallic floor, use about 1/3 of dish soap in a bucket of warm water.

The process of sweeping and mopping should be done regularly. And if there is a spill, this process will have to be done immediately. If there is an oil or chemical spill, wipe it up immediately and continue through the cleaning process. But this time, feel free to spot clean the area of the spill.

Tips on Maintenance

Though it’s easy to clean your coated floor, maintenance includes preventing spills or marks from happening. There are a few things you can do so that you won’t have to do emergency cleanups frequently.

The best way to avoid scratches is to not drag heavy furniture across the floor. You can purchase furniture slides or straps to move your furniture instead.

And if there is an area of the floor that sees a high amount of traffic, invest in floor mats to minimize scratches and scuffs.

Though mopping is necessary for cleaning your garage floor coating, do not let the water stand on it for too long. The water may leave salt or lines behind as it evaporates.  While this won’t immediately damage your floor, it’s certainly not a great look!

Finally, you should regularly inspect your floor for damage. One small crack can turn into a serious problem if it isn’t taken care of. But by inspecting your floor, you will catch these problems before they turn worse.
